The all-new, hydrogen-powered 2016 Toyota Mirai fuel-cell sedan is off to a great start, with 1,900 units booked in the U.S. since the company began taking orders two months ago.

Carscoop reports that Toyota initially planned to allocate only 1,000 copies of the 2016 model to American dealers. Deliveries will start later this month.

The website used for placing orders is now directing customers to a wait list. As soon as production is available, these people will be contacted by Toyota.

Back in January, the Japanese manufacturer announced that Mirai production would ramp up in order to meet strong demand in numerous markets around the globe.

What about Canada? Right now, the Toyota Canada website does mention the Mirai, but no release date is specified.
