This week, Toyota will unveil a concept based on its popular Prius hybrid sedan. The car will innovate by offering plug-in capability. Company engineers incorporated additional nickel-metal batteries to be charged by plugging the vehicle into a power outlet.

The extra energy stored by these batteries will allow a longer range in full electric mode. In normal driving conditions, it will be possible to drive at speeds of up to 60 km/h without the assist from the combustion engine. At the same time, the already impressive fuel economy of the Prius will be improved.

Later, in 2010, Toyota will introduce the next generation of the Prius. All-new lithium-ion batteries will be used, offering a significant increase in energy-storage capacity. However, before hitting the market, the new Prius will make its way into specific commercial fleets.
