Toyota's assembly plants in Ontario will see a future upgrade thanks to investments from the government of Canada along with the province of Ontario. The total investment plan, referred to as Project Green Light, is approximately $545 million and comes as Toyota's North American plants are working to return to normal production. During the 2008-'09 economic downturn, Toyota's Ontario plants suffered, and so the investment will help create jobs and boost production.
The two Ontario-based plants in Cambridge and Woodstock hire approximately 6, 500 employees and are responsible for manufacturing the Toyota Corolla, Toyota Matrix, Toyota RAV4 and Lexus RX350 vehicles.
What upgrades will these plants see? Well, they're meant to make the plants more efficient and environmentally friendly, hence the “Green Light” name. The Cambridge North plant paint shop will soon be able to switch to a water-born system instead of a solvent-borne system that will result in lower emissions.
