The auto industry is evolving at a fevered pace, but the school bus world hasn’t followed suit instead maintaining a status quo for the past 10, 20 and in some cases 30 years. Trans Tech Bus has recently taken things into the stratosphere, however, with its latest invention: the eTrans.

Accommodating 42 passengers, the eco-friendly school bus is powered by an electric engine that uses two 278-volt, lithium-ion batteries. With said engine, the eTrans can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h.

A full charge allows for a range of 160 to 210 km. Those impressive numbers are mainly due to the fact that the heating and air conditioning systems, which consume a lot of energy, run on natural gas or propane.

The eTrans will initially be launched in limited numbers in early 2012 and then on a larger scale in the second half of the year.
