No matter what the seats are made of or where the roof is, the C70 is supposed to "offer a lively driving experience without sacrificing comfort."
Widerstrand says the independent suspension is "designed to provide a
combination of comfortable suspension and fast, exact steering response while a broad track and long wheelbase give the car stability."
Dynamic Stability and Traction Control System (DXTCS) is standard, he adds, "and offers extra stability when driving on a slippery road surface. The steering is electro-hydraulic with a light, distinct, controlled feeling."
The C70 has had its side members, doors and sills "reinforced in various ways to compensate for the lack of a fixed roof," and the end result is a car with body torsional rigidity that's twice as good as the first C70.
The new Volvo C70 is being launched with Volvo's 2.5-litre, turbocharged inline-five that will create 218 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. According to Widerstrand, "an even torque curve makes the car highly responsive and offers excellent acceleration."
Buyers can take the five-speed automatic with Geartronic (Volvo's faux-manual program), or a six-speed manual originally developed for the Volvo S60 R and V70 R high-performance vehicles. "The six gears are adapted to deliver both rapid acceleration and a high top speed," Widerstrand promises, adding that "the gearbox has triple synchronization and a very distinct gear change."
According to Widerstrand, "The new Volvo C70 has a great deal of personality," but that is not a euphemism for unpredictability. "The driving pleasure is to be found in the harmonious interplay between the responsive driveline and the compliant chassis," he says.
