Volvo's chief designer, Simon Lamarre, has launched a blog talking about his experiences with creating the exterior of new C30.

Set to be sold as a 2007 model, the C30 made its public debut in Paris last week.

Lamarre, 38, studied Pure and Applied science at College Jean-de-Brebeuf and environmental design at Universite de Quebec. He joined Volvo in 1995 when clay was still the most common design tool.

He speaks six languages too. It's this sort of multi-cultured background and variety of skills that made him ideally suited to pen the Scandinavian carmakers latest model.

He explains "When I moved to Sweden, I had to learn Scandinavian design and values. That led me to view them with a different eye without taking anything for granted."

It seems Lamarre is inclined to work on groundbreaking projects. He designed the interior of the XC90 SUV- one of the largest passenger vehicles in the company's history. The C30 is just as revolutionary for the company- a full 22 cm shorter than the S40 sedan.

"I definitely enjoy working on something that isn't mainstream," says Lamarre. "But the C30 was extra fun because it was stepping away from what people would normally perceive as a Volvo."

He mentions gathering enthusiasm from the fact that the C30 doesn't appeal to the traditional Volvo customer but more to the single or couples market.
