Which engines according to WARDS are the best in terms of power, technology, fuel economy, noise and vibration severity?
Ward’s published its list of Top 10 engines of 2010 today. Proof that times are a-changin’, for the first time in 17 years an electric motor has made the cut, the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan LEAF coming in sixth and eighth, respectively.

The 3.0-litre, supercharged V6 powering the Audi S4 is the big winner, followed by the BMW 335i’s Inline-3 and the smaller, but oh-so-intoxicating four-cylinder, turbo mill motivating the Mini Cooper S.

Rather interestingly, no automaker has made the list twice. Dodge, Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Volkswagen and Volvo round out the hit parade.

The engines were selected by Ward’s editors, who drove the candidates daily during the months of October and November, using criteria such as power, technology, fuel efficiency, noise level and vibrations.

Here are the winners:

1- 3.0L TFSI Supercharged DOHC V-6 (Audi S4)
2- 3.0L N55 Turbocharged DOHC I-6 (BMW 335i)
3- 1.6L Turbocharged DOHC I-4 (Mini Cooper S)
4- 3.6L Pentastar DOHC V-6 (Dodge Avenger)
5- 5.0L DOHC V-8 (Ford Mustang GT)
6- 1.4L DOHC I-4/111kW Drive Motor (Chevrolet Volt)
7- 5.0L Tau DOHC V-8 (Hyundai Genesis)
