We’re not too sure on this one. Motor Trend reports that Subaru will take a whole different approach with the next generation of its WRX sports car. According to the US publication, a new WRX will not see the light of day before 2014 and will employ totally different components than the compact Impreza.

This doesn’t seem right. It seems as though the new WRX will be a coupe model with a shorter wheelbase and more aggressive bodywork. Motor Trend even goes as far as saying that their sources indicate Subaru management being undecided whether to keep the WRX moniker or change it. What?

The article also states that in order to share parts with the performance version, the entry-level Imprezas are over-engineered. Again, according to their source, Subaru is playing around with a turbo 1.6-litre boxer that cranks out 270 hp, and that a twin-charger system is in the plans as well. As for the STI, it would share the same engine as the WRX but would produce more than 300 hp. Finally, the car would be slightly bigger than a Yaris (!)

Let’s hope most of this turns out to be false.
