Canadian Maxx Ebenal leads 2015 Asian Formula Renault 2.0 championship
From press release
BlackArts Racing driver Maxx Ebenal arrived in China one week before the first two rounds of the 2015 Asian Formula Renault 2.0 championship ready to prove a point. The Canadian driver was able to prove that point by winning both rounds back to back, scoring enough points to lead the championship. Ebenal quickly adapted to the brand new FR2.0/13 car during practice early in the week, always being at the top of the timesheets. At the end of qualifying, Maxx would secure a second place start for race 1 and Pole position for race 2.
Saturday afternoon the grandstands were over-filled with 35,000+ fans waiting to watch the first race of the AFR season. Maxx started in second position for race 1. After the start, Maxx followed the leader around for two laps waiting for the right moment to make his move. On lap 2 of the race, Maxx was able to take advantage of the leader, who was slow out of the first corner. Once Maxx was in the lead, he was able to build a comfortable gap between himself and 2nd place, for the rest of the race. He crossed the finish line in first place, earning the maiden victory of the 2015 season. The second race of the weekend would be held late Sunday afternoon. The BlackArts Racing Formula Renault would start on pole position. Maxx did not have his best start, and lost the lead going into corner 1. Two corners later chaos broke out when the 4th place driver braked too late. "I saw a blue car in my left mirror coming up way too fast, so I quickly decided to slow my car and avoid the mess", says Ebenal. After avoiding the wreck on the first lap, Maxx was able to maintain 2nd position until a safety car was deployed on lap 3. Surprisingly, the safety car was only out for half a lap. Two laps after the safety car, Maxx made a very aggressive move into turn 7 to successfully take the lead. The Canadian handled the pressure from 2nd place for the rest of the 12-lap race, ultimately crossing the finish line in 1st position. Already off to a great start, Maxx is looking for more partners to join him as he battles to be the 2015 AFR Champion. The next rounds of Asian Formula Renault 2.0 championship will be in Malaysia at the Sepang F1 circuit held on April 25-26.
