This weekend, the circuit of Zandvoort in the Netherlands will stage the sixth of the 11 rounds of the 2010 DTM season.
The Dutch dune circuit has been a fixture on the DTM calendar since 2001 and the popular international touring car series always provided the crowds thrilling motor racing on the 4.307-kilometre circuit. Located just a stone’s throw away from the North Sea, the circuit is embedded in the dunes and features both uphill and downhill sections. Due to the dunes that surround the track, a lot of sand is blown on the track. Therefore, staying on the racing line is quite a challenge. Canadian Bruno Spengler, one of the four drivers of the works Mercedes HWA squadron, is on top of the point standings. With two wins, two-second places and a third, Spengler leads Jamie Green by 16 points and Gary Paffett by 17. “My objective is to stretch my lead in Zandvoort,” said Spengler. “Last year, I qualified third for this race, so I know I can achieve a good result on Sunday. But the Mercedes team knows that this track is better suited for our rivals. But anything can happen over there because the weather is always uncertain. It is very difficult to pass on this track, so grid position is extremely important. It is also crucial to have a car that is quick and constant on used tires,” Spengler said.
