Having been kept secret in Peugeot Sport’s factory in Vélizy, near Paris, the team’s new endurance challenger – known under the codename 90X – has been out for its first track test last week on the Monza Autodrome in Italy.
Peugeot Sport has released some official photos of their new car to the medias. Using two photos, we here compare the two Le Mans LMP1 cars, the older 908 and the new 90X.
The 90X complies with the Automobile Club de l’Ouest’s 2011 regulations, and notably incorporates a shark fin appendix on the engine cover. This new feature is designed to prevent the car from going airborne in the case of a high-speed spin. As it did for the 908 HDi FAP, Peugeot Sport has opted for a closed cockpit, while the car meets the mandatory 900kg weight requirement. The rear wing is supported from the top and not from underneath. It is believed that Peugeot will run the 90x in the hybrid configuration. Two years ago, a 908 was modified to run as a hybrid and some preliminary tests were performed then. "Work on the engine’s development is ongoing. Endurance racing is a proving ground that provides us with an opportunity to showcase all the brand’s technologies,” said Bruno Famin, the Technical Director of Peugeot Sport. A large air box has appeared on top of the car. The sidepods have been heavily revised and the front section of the car has been raised a bit. The air scoops for the turbochargers are smaller on the 90X. The exhausts no longer emerge from the sides of the car, but at the rear, like they are on the Zytek car. Recent Articles
