Formula 1's second winter test got underway Thursday morning at the Circuito de Jerez in southern Spain as preparations continue for the start of the new season.
So far, the weather in Jerez has been warm and sunny with a temperature of 19 degrees.
Ferrari’s Felipe Massa set in the morning a time of 1.20.709 that proved to be unbeatable, even in the second part of the day. Driving the Ferrari F150th Italia, Massa completed 101 laps of the 4.428km track. Mexican Sergio Perez set the second fastest time behind the wheel of the Sauber C30-Ferrari. The Swiss team concentrated on set-up and worked on the braking system and also planned to run out of fuel, which was why the car stopped out on the track. In the afternoon, Sauber carried out back-to-back comparisons to learn more about the mechanical set up of the car.
Mark Webber was third in the Red Bull-Renault RB7, finishing the day just in front of rookie Daniel Ricciardo who drove the Toro Rosso-Ferrari today. The team put in a lot of work at the factory, making changes to the STR6 based on data acquired in Valencia and the first day in Jerez would suggest that those changes have delivered signs of progress. Lewis Hamilton was fifth in the McLaren MP4-26. In the morning, the British team focused on short runs to enable Lewis and the engineers to run through a number of systems checks and make small set-up and tire-compound changes in order to gauge the car’s reaction to adjustments. In the latter part of the day, the team ran the new hybrid system for the first time.
As we can see for the photography, team McLaren performed some aero work with a fully instrumented floor to understand how the diffuser is working.
