Autosport magazine Wednesday reports that a new rule for 2015 will prevent Formula 1 drivers to change their helmet design during the season.
During their recent meeting in Geneva, the members of the F1 Commission discussed new rules to make F1 more appealing to the fans. The team directors admitted they were concerned that drivers constantly changing their helmet colours turn off fans. Unlike the days of Gilles Villeneuve, Ayrton Senna and James Hunt when a drivers' iconic helmet design was part of his appeal, these days some drivers change their colours and designs at every Grand Prix.
For example, Sebastian Vettel has used around 60 different helmet designs over the course of his career. To add to the confusion, all Red Bull drivers (Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso) wear blue-and-silver helmets that are almost identical.
Autosport mentions that teams, the FIA and Bernie Ecclestone have agreed to limit drivers to just one helmet design for the season. The proposal was approved at the meeting in Geneva, and is ready to be ratified by the FIA's World Motor Sport Council for introduction in 2015.
