Reigning Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton Friday topped the first two free practice sessions of the Grand Prix de Monaco.
He topped the morning practice in his Mercedes W06, lapping the twisty and narrow street circuit just 0.149s faster than Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen, who is racing here for the very first time. Daniel Ricciardo was third for Red Bull Racing ahead of the Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel. Carlos Sainz was fifth for Toro Rosso, followed by the Lotus of Pastor Maldonado and the second Red Bull of Daniil Kvyat. There were plenty of minor incidents as drivers explored the limits of grip.
Free practice 2 Rain arrived around 20 minutes into the second practice session and rendered subsequent lap time improvements all but impossible. Most drivers set times during the early part of the session when the track was dry. Hamilton again set the fastest time, seven-tenths clear of Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg and over a second ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. Ferrari’s other driver, Kimi Raikkonen ended up fourth, followed by Red Bull’s Kvyat, and the Toro Rossos of Sainz and Verstappen. McLaren-Honda’s Fernando Alonso, Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg and Lotus’ Romain Grosjean completed the top ten. All drivers set their quickest times on the soft Pirelli rubber. No one really sampled the new super soft tire. Roberto Merhi caused a red flag when he lost control and tapped the wall in his Manor Marussia, damaging the nose cone and the right front suspension.
