The Williams F1 Team has confirmed today a long term partnership with the world’s fifth largest oil exporter, Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA), also a major sponsor of their newly signed rookie, Pastor Maldonado.
With the interdiction of tobacco companies’ sponsorship several years ago, it now seems like F1 teams will go looking for oil companies to make up for the big bucks to fill their budget with. Drivers supported by oil companies have started to make their way on the Formula 1 grid recently - Maldonado reportedly carried a $15M sponsorship from PDVSA. It is therefore reasonable to believe that we will see more and more oil money (also called petro-dollars in the popular jargon) injected in the sport in the years to come. Ironically, Formula 1 aims at becoming greener in the next couple of years, with, notably, the return of the KERS system and other such ideas that are meant to be implemented in a near future.
