The proposal to increase V6 turbo hybrid Formula 1 engines to the magical mark of 1000bhp is still under discussion.
Formula 1's Strategy Group met in Paris on Thursday to discuss in detail proposals to revamp the look and increase speed of cars for the 2017 season. The Group first refused to change the current engine formula, going from the current V6 single turbo to V8 biturbo engines. Instead, the 1000bhp move should be achieved through increasing the fuel flow rate limit and maximum fuel allowance of 100kg per race. The engine suppliers (Ferrari, Renault, Mercedes and Honda) have now been asked to produce more detailed proposals over the next few weeks to see if this is realistic to achieve. Additionally, F1 teams have also been evaluating ways to make the cars better - with additional downforce, more aggressive designs and wider tires now being looked at for next season. Several ideas of how to achieve this are being considered, but one of the key factors being looked at is how to reach these goals without raising the costs up dramatically. The technical directors of teams are now likely to discuss the proposals – as well as the cost implications - when they meet in scheduled working group meetings with the FIA later this month.
