A major change at the top of the VW Group management could open the door to a Formula 1entry in a few years’ time.
According to the business press, the VW Executive Committee of the Supervisory Board has downgraded Ferdinand Piech, head of the Volkswagen Group. The Board recommended that CEO Martin Winterkorn be offered a new extensive and long-term contract from 2016 onward. Piech never wanted a brand of the VW Group to enter Formula 1 as long as Bernie Ecclestone would lead the sport. The VW Group has long been rumoured to be looking at an F1 entry with one of its brands and Audi is widely understood to be the most likely to undertake an F1 program. Last year, Audi recruited three key ex-F1 staff members. They were ex-Ferrari F1 team principal Stefano Domenicali, former BMW and Williams engineer Jorg Zander and Gabriele Delicolli, who is a former Ferrari simulator specialist. Audi has a vast experience of energy recovery systems as these were specifically developed for its R18 Le Mans winning LMP1 car.
