Reigning Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton has been forced to withdraw from the first day of testing in Barcelona because of illness. The Mercedes AMG driver completed 11 laps in the W06 on the opening morning of the four-day Spanish test before deciding to abandon driving for the day. The Silver Arrows’ test driver Pascal Wehrlein, who was midway through the first of two days of running for Force India, has been recalled by Mercedes to assume driving duties from Hamilton for the rest of the day. Mercedes AMG technical director Paddy Lowe told Sky Sports F1 "we have a tough programme today, and we don't want to overuse Nico [Rosberg]". UPDATE Germany's Auto Motor und Sport claimed that Mercedes AMG did not run Nico Rosberg today because he’s be suffering from an inflamed nerve in his neck. Correspondent Michael Schmidt said the 29-year-old has been "advised by doctors to completely recover from the inflammation, lest the problem recurs".
