Ferdinand Piech, Volkswagen Automobile Group (VAG) chairman, has surprised the board on Saturday by resigning from his role.
Deputy Chairman Berthold Huber assumes leadership of the board until the election of a new chairman. Martin Winterkorn should be named the new chairman of Volkswagen Group. Ferdinand Piech is known to be against entering Formula 1, due to a dislike with Bernie Ecclestone. As Martin Winterkorn is a big motorsport fan and is particularly supportive of Audi's involvement in the DTM racing series, the door could now be open to the company joining the F1 grid, with one of VW brands Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Seat or Skoda. Audi recently hired three ex-F1 staff members, including former Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali, former BMW and Williams engineer Jorg Zander, and former Ferrari simulator specialist Gabriele Delicolli. Audi had also conducted a feasibility study into F1 and its potential benefits, with a favourable outcome.
