The dreaded looking two car drafts at NASCAR’s restrictor plate tracks may become a footnote in history according to Larry McReynolds.
McReynolds a former Richard Childress Racing crew chief and currently television commentator on Fox Sports tweeted: "If you are not a fan of the 2 car/driver tango at Day. and Tall. we learned yesterday that NASCAR in 2012 will not allow drivers to talk to They will not allow drivers to talk to each other on radio, nor can they talk to other team's spotter, crew chief, or any other member of Cannot talk to any other member of another team on the radio during any race! Interesting and with other rule changes to cooling, etc."
Ever since Talladega and Daytona were repaved raising grip levels, NASCAR drivers, especially at the Sprint Cup level, found that a two-car tandem worked better than the classic pack racing fans loved for these years since the restrictor plate on the carburetor was introduced. At the 2011 Daytona 500 interim rules were released between the qualifying weekend and the race weekend reducing the size of the radiator opening which would reduce cooling efficiency when two cars were hooked up for any length of time. UPDATE A few hours later, NASCAR issued the following statement: "We are having and will continue to have discussions with the race teams about radio communication, in particular, teams communicating between one another during events and expect to have a policy in place for the 2012 season."
