The GTI has been associated with driving enthusiasts for over 33 years. A true industry icon, it remains a major player in the high-performance compact car segment today. You could say that the GTI is the first of its class, a class where it forged the standards.

The GTI is an accomplished vehicle that has reached maturity.

The automotive landscape has changed dramatically in the last 33 years, and the competition is truly fierce today. No matter what others say, I myself am a fervent admirer and defender of the thin red line circling the grille, an indicator of true and affordable driving pleasure. I even admit to signing a contract in 1998 that gave me the keys to one of the little toys of the time.

The GTI is no more and no less than a Rabbit pumped up on adrenaline. Not surprising then, that the two are virtually identical. The two-door versions like my tester seem to have a little more attitude than their five-door counterparts. Style-wise, it seems frozen in time and, like its predecessors, will age well. In fact, the next generation, already available in Europe, continues the tradition with strikingly similar looks.

Wirklich deutsch
Aesthetically identical to the Rabbit, the cabin holds few surprises. It features the same cold precision typical of German cars. To drive home the fact that you’re truly sitting in a GTI, Volkswagen used some differentiating touches such as topstitching, a smattering of brushed aluminum, a sport steering wheel and closer-fitting seats.

The finish remains true to form, with supple materials and high-quality plastics. The front seats are very comfortable. The driving position is virtually ideal and gives the impression of being in control at all times. The high dash board ensures easy access to all controls. Speaking of access, climbing into the back is a little tricky, but the rear seats prove comfortable once you’re settled in. Don’t forget that the GTI is also available in a five-door variant, and buyers who plan on regularly using the rear seats should opt for this model.

The finish remains true to form, with supple materials and high-quality plastics and fhe front seats are very comfortable.
