More power from its smallest V8 heads the list of changes Ford of Canada will make to its lineup of full-size F-Series pickups for 2001, as the Oakville-based company runs hard to stay ahead of the competition from General Motors of Canada.

GM has been aggressive about promoting its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra lines since they were upgraded a couple of years ago, causing Ford to up its ante with the F-Series. So there's a new model to talk about, and upgrades and improvements across various F-Series lines.

The new model for 2001 is the F-150 SuperCrew, which F-150 brand manager Jack Turner says is another example of how Ford is "advancing the product by delivering exactly what customers are seeking and have come to expect from a Ford truck."

Turner calls the 2001 F-150 SuperCrew a "pure truck innovation. Based on the trusted and proven F-150 SuperCab pickup, it offers customers four full-size doors and a full rear seat for added interior comfort and cargo-carrying versatility."

SuperCrew delivers many first- or best-in-class features, Turner claims, including standard power adjustable pedals, an optional power moonroof, a rear-seat entertainment system, and the functional bed extender, which flips out to increase the length of the box to carry longer items.

To bring more performance to units with the 4.6-litre version of the company's modular V8 line, Ford engineers have tweaked the 16-valve engine so that it now delivers 231 horsepower at 4750 rpm, an increase of 5 percent. Torque stays the same - 293 pound-feet at 3500 rpm - but Brian Bly, the technical service support manager of Ford of Canada, points out that 95 percent of that power is available at 2200 rpm.

Other changes to the F-150 lineup for 2001 include:

  • 4-wheel ABS is now standard on all F-150 models
  • Power adjustable accelerator and brake pedals, which were standard on the F-150 SuperCrew, are now standard on all Lariat models and optional on XL and XLT trucks
  • Remote reyless entry is now standard on XLT
  • New lighted visor vanity mirrors are standard on Lariat
  • A colour-keyed leather-wrapped steering wheel is standard on XLT
  • A cassette player has been added to the AM/FM stereo radio on the XL
  • A single-CD AM/FM stereo with four speakers is now standard on XLT and Lariat models, replacing the stereo cassette system in XL with Value Group.
The base engine for F-Series remains unchanged, with the 4.2-litre OHV V6 developing 202 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. All models can also be equipped with the optional 5.4L SOHC V8 that puts out 260 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque.

A 5-speed manual overdrive transmission, which is standard on Regular Cab and SuperCab models, has an overdrive fifth gear to reduce engine rpm at highway speeds. The 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission is optional on Regular Cab and SuperCab models but standard on the F-150 SuperCrew.

Turner calls the F-150 a "truck for all reasons," since it offers a "wide variety of choices to meet customers' needs for work and personal use." Cab designs include Regular Cab and SuperCab, in both Styleside and Flareside versions, as well as the new SuperCrew.

Regular Cab and SuperCab buyers can choose short- and long-wheelbase models and 6.5- or 8-foot pickup box lengths. SuperCrew is available in one wheelbase and a 5.5-foot box.

All models are available with 4x2 and 4x4 drive systems.

On Regular Cab and SuperCab models the trim choices are XL, XLT and Lariat, while on the F-150 SuperCrew it's XLT or Lariat.

Optional interior features in the F-150 include air conditioning, an overhead console, power windows with delayed accessory power and One-Touch-Down driver's window, power locks, tilt steering wheel, speed control, power adjustable pedals, Remote Keyless Entry System, power moonroof, and more.
