2002 Dodge Ram 1500 - The Power Broker Gets a New Suit

Introduced in 1993 as a 1994 model, the bold highway truck inspired Ram pick-up took the light truck market by storm. Dodge faithful finally had a truck as good looking as it was tough while those who had never thought to purchase a Dodge product before flocked into showrooms. It was a giant success, selling over 200,000 units in its first year compared to 70,000 the year previous - peaking at 350,000 with the addition of the Club Cab. Eight years after its inception the all-new Ram 1500 is here. But is it as good as the truck it replaces?

How does it look? It would be hard to make as dramatic an entrance with the new 2002 model as the original did in 1993. The new model is more evolutionary than revolutionary, yet still makes a powerful statement all its own. Dodge's trademark grille has grown even taller, achieved by raising and crowning the hood while incorporating a cut-out in the front bumper. To offset the usual negative aerodynamic characteristics of a larger grille, the windscreen is canted 5 degrees rearward to improve airflow. All remaining body surfaces have been made smoother as well, giving the Ram a more refined appearance.

What's it like inside? It's quiet. The doors shut with a solid 'thunk' more reminiscent of a European luxury car than a domestic truck. It's also the roomiest passenger compartment in its class, especially in 4-door guise. The rear seats fold 60/40 when three's a crowd or if a secure dry storage area is needed. The quality of plastics and general fit and finish has improved as well. Wealthy farmers and hedonistic truck lovers alike will be glad the new Ram can be equipped to luxury car standards including power adjustable foot pedals, especially appreciated by height challenged drivers.
