All Wheel Drive Charisma

It's hardly a myth that the [link arttid="21931"]S80[/link] changed the face of Volvo as the world knew it, boldly shedding the brand's boxy image. Earlier this year Volvo updated its flagship model, adding technology and styling enhancements, as well as an all-wheel drive system borrowed from the smaller S60 and V70.

Let's take a closer look to see if this Nordic company's updated S80 2.5T AWD is ready to tackle its two primary markets: the high end sport/luxury sedan segment led by the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, as well as the premium all-wheel drive category headed by Audi's A6 - and M-B E again if ordered with 4Matic AWD.

So does it look the part? It's difficult to argue that it doesn't. Volvo has refined Doug Fraser's initial design, but the differences are subtle to say the least. The car's jutting grille, abrupt decklid drop off and flowing body lines are still virtually the same while its deeply carved shoulders continue to trail the length of the car - a key design element pulled from the old 240 series cars and now used across the lineup.

But taking a close look at the new S80's face, its crate-patterned grille looks sportier, while a redesigned front bumper and valance feature altered intake vents outlined in chrome. From behind, the new car has a completely revised trunk, crafted from heavier but more solid steel as opposed the older model's two-piece aluminum lid. The taillights are slightly smaller on the new car as well; however their overall effectiveness has not suffered due to new brighter and more powerful LED lights.
