One of the most hotly contested segments in the car industry is the midsized sedans. If a manufacturer cannot breakthrough in this group, they will probably not achieve the success that they are looking for. In other words, manufacturers have to come up with winners to get a share of the sales pie otherwise, they pack up their bags and go home.

The 2006 Ford Fusion is all-new and set to replace the aging and forgettable Taurus. This car has been given styling and substance that had been missing in the Taurus for well over 10 years. Back then, the Taurus was one of the best selling cars which is no longer true today. Hopefully for Ford, the Fusion will help recapture some of those lost sales.

The SE 4-cylinder starts at $22,999. The top-of-the-line SEL V6 with options has a suggested retail price of about $32,500.

Styling

The exterior is bold and innovative; basically, Bill Ford got what he has been asking for. The product is very nice and original. What is particularly distinguishable of the Fusion is the front end. The three-bar grill coupled to the matching lower-bumper bars gives it that unmistakable look. The Fusion is sleek and slim looking. The squared-off headlights are also very original and fit perfectly with the rest of the car. The taillights look like they have been borrowed from the mid-nineties Honda Prelude. This was one of the most common comments I got about the styling of the car.

Although the car does not look like any other Ford, much of it still feels like a Ford: the door handles, some of the buttons and the sound generated from the doors slamming. It is kind of an eerie reminder of where the car originates. Overall, the cabin of the Fusion is very sober. There is nothing exciting going on, no trick controls or flashy layouts. The fanciest item in the car is the addition of an analogue clock in the center portion of the dashboard of the SEL.

The fit and finish is quite good. In the case of Ford, this is not unusual as I
have often noticed that the Blue Oval can properly assemble an interior; make sure you do not have to take it apart though. The materials are fair however make sure that the colour you select is dark or a combination or dark and light. My tester's all tan plastic was tasteless. The seats are fairly comfy, in both rows. Front and rear legroom is good although the third person in the second may find the comfort level to be very marginal.
