• Auto123 reviews the 2026 Buick Encore GX Sport Touring.
The subcompact crossover segment was, is and may ever be one of the most fiercely contested arenas in the Canadian automotive market. Positioned between the entry-level Envista and the larger compact Envision within Buick’s lineup, the Encore GX serves as an entry point into Buick’s lineup and it also happens to be the brand's best-selling vehicle in Canada.
Straddling the line between mainstream and premium luxury offerings, the Encore GX aims to carve out a niche by prioritizing cabin serenity and advanced digital real estate over raw mechanical performance.
2026 Buick Encore GX - What’s New for 2026?
The Buick Encore GX is largely unchanged for 2026, no surprise given the architecture and styling updates it received during a comprehensive 2024 mid-cycle refresh. The alterations for 2026 are thus minor and restricted to paint choices, equipment packaging and small utility deletions.
Specifically, a new Brilliant Red exterior paint colour joins the palette, replacing the outgoing Cinnabar Metallic finish. Mechanically, a standard tire inflator kit now replaces the traditional spare tire, which is now an option only.
Lastly and leastly, there’s no longer an option for a rear cargo net.

Design of the 2026 Buick Encore GX - 8,0/10
Visually, the Encore GX integrates Buick's current global corporate design language. The small SUV was actually the first in the lineup to adopt the brand’s modernized, un-circled tri-shield logo alongside a signature forward-leaning front-end aesthetic. The front fascia incorporates updated lighting signatures, sharp bumpers and specific wheel designs that align it with larger stablemates.
While the execution is cohesive, the overall look is designed to blend in rather than attract overt attention on the road. We say it’s rather successful at that, though it’s all tasteful enough. You’d have to be a tad mean-spirited to find this Encore GX ugly.
The mid-tier Sport Touring trim introduces a more aggressive, athletic appearance to the subcompact shell. The ST variant discards some of the brightwork found on other trims in favor of gloss-black exterior accents, distinctive bumpers, and specific wheel designs intended to convey a more dynamic stance.

Interior
Inside, the passenger cabin represents Buick’s “almost-luxury” approach to product development. This philosophy manifests as an asymmetric distribution of materials: the first row benefits from soft-touch plastics, premium textures and unique stitching patterns, whereas the rear quarters receive harder, less expensive plastics. Front-row legroom compares favourably against major segment benchmarks like the Honda HR-V, and there’s sufficient headroom and legroom to accommodate average-sized adults comfortably in the second row.
The rear seats split and fold in a conventional 60/40 layout, yielding 665 litres of luggage room that expands to 1,421 litres when lowered. The Sport Touring trim adds a sporty flat-bottom steering wheel and features distinctive ST logos embroidered directly into the front headrests.
For maximum utility, a folding front passenger seat is standard on the topline Avenir and optional on lower grades, allowing long items to be carried diagonally inside the cabin.
Technology in the 2026 Buick Encore GX - 8,0/10
The centerpiece inside is Buick’s Virtual Cockpit System. This layout houses 48 cm of high-definition digital real estate underneath a continuous sheet of glass. The system comprises an 8-inch configurable driver information display alongside an 11-inch infotainment touchscreen, both angled subtly toward the driver's position. Cable-free integration is standard via wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, supplemented by built-in Wi-Fi capability.
The vehicle features standard active noise cancellation technology. Part of Buick's proprietary QuietTuning engineering, this system works to actively counteract road and wind noise, establishing what Buick vaunts as one of the quietest acoustic environments in the subcompact class.
Moving up the trim hierarchy or checking optional packages unlocks features such as a wireless phone charger, rain-sensing wipers, a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control and a hands-free power liftgate.

Powertrain of the 2026 Buick Encore GX - 7.0/10
While the exterior and cabin lean toward premium conventions, the mechanical specifications under the hood are more utilitarian. For the Canadian market, the sole available powertrain configuration is a 1.3L turbocharged three-cylinder engine. This downsized powerplant develops 155 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque, with the bulk of its thrust delivered at low engine speeds to assist with urban acceleration.
The choice of driven wheels dictates the accompanying transmission. The base model uses front-wheel drive paired with a continuously variable transmission. All-wheel-drive models swap the CVT for a traditional 9-speed automatic transmission. The AWD system is engineered to engage automatically from a standing start to eliminate wheelspin before reverting to a front-drive format once the vehicle is in motion; however, the system requires the driver to physically engage a button to keep the system active for reactive slippage detection, unlike the fully automated setups seen elsewhere.
Natural Resources Canada rates the front-wheel-drive variant at 8.0L/100 km in the city and 7.6L/100 km on the highway, resulting in a combined average of 7.8L/100 km. Opting for the all-wheel-drive models increases fuel consumption to 9.2L/100 km city, 8.4L/100 km highway and 8.8L/100 km combined.

Driving the 2026 Buick Encore GX - 7.0/10
On the road, the Encore GX prioritizes isolated comfort and straight-line composure over cornering enthusiasm or driving engagement. The chassis is tuned to absorb imperfections well, demonstrating commendable composure when navigating rough paved surfaces or broken Canadian roads.
The primary limitation of the driving experience originates from the three-cylinder engine. While the 155-hp output is comparable to mainstream competitors, power delivery sounds and feels unrefined under hard acceleration. The engine exhibits a coarse acoustic signature that pierces the otherwise well-insulated cabin when pushed, and the small displacement fails to deliver premium-tier efficiency when paired with the added weight of the all-wheel-drive hardware.

The final word
The 2026 Buick Encore GX successfully delivers on traditional brand pillars like a quiet cabin, comfortable front-row accommodations and an accessible entry point into all-wheel-drive utility.
However, its premium marketing angle can be difficult to reconcile with its mechanical realities. The 3-cylinder engine lacks refinement and the overall package struggles to assert a clear advantage in efficiency or luxury over less expensive mainstream alternatives like the Honda HR-V or Mazda CX-30. The Encore GX remains a choice dictated primarily by a preference for quiet cruising and sharp screen layouts.
