While an FX version of the Corolla had been available on the U.S. market during the 1980s, when 1988 rolled around and Toyota presented a new generation of products, the FX version stayed in Japan. In 1992 it adopted the form you see here. Even today, this model comes up often in online discussions of capable hatchbacks of that era.
