Of course it wouldn't be a Bentley without a cloud-like ride, and the team from Crewe made sure not a pebble would be felt via Girling hydraulic self-leveling ride control in the rear. It was smoother when configured to its standard or 3,161 mm (124.5 in) wheelbase, 1986 and onwards, but offered sharper turn-in in short wheelbase guise due to a 100 mm (4.0 in) reduction.

What would a Bentley be without a cloud-like ride? Like a cushion of air, the Girling hydraulic self-leveling ride control system makes the roughest roads seem freshly paved. (Photo: http://www.auto-salon-singen.de)

In the beginning its ride was softer still due to a smaller diameter wheel and tire package. Fifteen inch rims were surrounded by 275/55VR15 performance tires upgraded to 16-inch wheels and 255/65VR16 tires in 1993. In 1994 its wheels and tires grew to 17-inches and 255/55WR17 respectively, allowing an electronically limited maximum speed of 249 km/h (155 mph) by its final year. As mentioned previously top speed was initially 220 km/h (137 mph), developing to 235 km/h (146 mph) by 1988.

As expected, the Bentley Turbo R interior is superb, covered from floor to roof with the highest quality leather, walnut trim, and Wilton carpet. (Photo: http://www.auto-salon-singen.de)

With such speeds the massive Bentley needed large diameter rotors to bring it down to a full stop when necessary. All cars came equipped with ventilated discs up front and solid rotors in the rear, while a 4-channel electronic anti-lock system (ABS) and anti-dive geometry was added in 1986.

Performance aside the Turbo R was as luxurious as cars came during its ten year tenure, with magnificent workmanship throughout. If a surface wasn't covered in the highest quality full hide leather then it would be adorned with burr walnut veneer panels incorporating straight grained walnut cross-banding. One such panel touches open to reveal the in-car entertainment system and smoker's accessories. The large seats are orthopedically designed to reduce stress, with later examples offering two-stage front seat heating and a bi-level lumbar support system. The Wilton carpet and lambs wool rugs are best experienced with shoes removed, driver excluded.
