SW20 Toyota MR2 a rare and enjoyable coupe with decent reliability
Note that given the age of the used second-generation MR2 you may be considering, many owners will have added aftermarket performance parts to taste. Typically, intake and exhaust modifications are safe—though shoppers unfamiliar with engine tuning should avoid models with aftermarket turbocharger system modifications, nitrous or computer ‘upgrades’.

On the test drive, check the MR2 you’re looking at extensively for rust. Common rust areas include the rocker panels, trunklid and around the rear wheel wells. Check the strut towers for signs of heavy rust, too. Try and find a non winter-driven model to be safe.

Scrutinize the shape of the interior fabric and trim, noting any excessive wear or damage. Note the condition of the vehicle’s paint too—as some factory paint colours were prone to fading and peeling as the vehicle aged. Finally, open the trunk, pull away the carpeting and check for signs of moisture and rust.

Avoid models that puff smoke at startup or while idling, and note that an unstable idle or ‘hesitation’ during moderate or full-throttle acceleration could indicate a sensor-related engine-control problem. The latter may be evidenced by a check-engine light.

Turbocharged models should be inspected by a mechanic for proper turbocharger operation. Heavy oily deposits in the ‘charge pipes’, as well as exhaust smoke under acceleration or while idling at operating temperature could be signs that the turbocharger is on its way out. The MR2’s turbo engine was a solid performer, though some owners report failure of the factory turbocharger at relatively low miles.

Also note any coolant or oil leaks from the turbocharged engine, particularly down the back of the engine block and ahead of the factory ‘downpipe’. Two small fluid hoses in this area may be the culprits. The hoses only cost a few dollars, though labour to replace them can be expensive due to limited accessibility.

A compression check and full mechanical inspection by a Toyota mechanic is strongly advised for peace of mind.

Find a model that’s been well cared for and checks out? Ultimately, a clean, healthy and rust-free MR2 should prove a unique, affordable and sporty driving experience for enthusiasts to enjoy for years.
