Back to the Intrepid specifically, original models came in two trim levels, base models were named STD and top-of-the-line cars received the ES designation. Standard equipment on base models included an AM/FM audio system, tilt steering, velour/cloth bucket seats (a front bench was optional), center console, digital clock, power windows, locks and mirrors, intermittent wipers, rear window defroster, power steering, power brakes, tachometer, dual front airbags and height-adjustable seatbelts.

ES models added upgraded interior materials, air conditioning, power driver's seat, fog lights, cassette player, cruise control, alloy wheels and a remote trunk release. Anti-lock brakes were optional on both trim levels, as was an integrated child seat. ES models also received 4-wheel disc brakes, while base models made do with rear drums. Generally the brakes were good, but brake discs were prone to premature wear and warping.

Both models received V6 engines, a 153-hp 3.3-L for the STD and a 214-hp 3.5-L for the ES. (Photo: DiamlerChrysler)

Both models received V6 power as standard equipment. The 3.3-L engine from the base car was rather archaic compared to Chrysler's current crop, producing 153 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque from its OHV, 2-valve per cylinder architecture. It did offer decent fuel economy though, at 11.8 L/100 km (20 mpg) in the city and 8.4 (28) on the highway. ES models received a 3.5-L SOHC 24-valve V6, with 214 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque.
