Only one transmission was offered between the two engines, an Ultradrive A606 42LE 4-speed automatic that usually did a good job of smoothing out shift intervals. It did have a few issues, with reports of shift inconsistency, hesitation, occasional rough shifting and premature failure. Transmission cooling line leakage was a relatively common problem as was failure of the input/output speed sensor, causing jerkiness in lower gears and occasionally loss of power.

In 1994 an additional 8-hp and 4 lb-ft of torque made for more spirited acceleration, plus air conditioning and a touring suspension became standard features. The ES model upgrade brought new variable-assist power steering, optional on base models. Additional new options included a power glass sunroof, security alarm and power passenger seat. For 1995 ABS became standard on ES models while traction control was a new ES option.

Model year 1996 saw a great deal more improvements in base trim, mostly due to the need to be more competitive with an all-new Ford Taurus that was coming onto the scene. Standard fog lamps, lower sill moldings and 16-inch wheels made the base model appear closer to its top-line ES sibling while a host of new colors and seat fabrics raised the bar yet further. Also a variety of refinements reduced the Intrepid's noise, vibration and harshness levels. Standard equipment now included air conditioning and cruise control while a new CD/cassette combo became optional. For safeties sake all Intrepids received side impact upgrades to 1997 standards. ES models received leather seats, a standard CD player, glass sunroof and much more.
For its final year in this body style, 1997, the Intrepid hardly changed. An optional Sport Group added the 3.5-liter V6 engine on base models, which also received an upgraded cassette player as standard equipment. New bolt-on wheel covers debuted as well as a new exterior color. Less visible, the Intrepid's 4-speed automatic transmission was fitted with new software to improve shift quality.
