1996 - 2001 Audi A4 - Nearly Perfect Compact Sedan

At one time it was hard to imagine that the previous generation 1996 to 2001 A4 would ever look out of date, but next to the chiseled 2002 - 2003 model it does. Still, on its own it stands out as one of the most attractive automotive designs in decades and, unlike the 90 series that predated it, will most likely wear extremely well for years to come.

The same has to be said for its gorgeous interior. The A4 quickly became the benchmark for compact luxury sedans in quality of materials and fit and finish. Its comfortable leather seats are on the firm side, supportive to the lower legs, mid-back and shoulders. Its 3-prong leather-wrapped steering wheel incorporated one of the most compact airbags of the time, making the elegantly packaged instrument cluster easier to discern. Subtle authentic wood and metal accents highlight the cabin area, while switchgear is precise with an upscale tactile quality.

While virtually every traditional luxury option came standard, except leather upholstery, premium Bose audio and keyless entry, unique features such as optional 6-way heated front seats and a multi-incremental sunroof went that extra mile to show customers Audi really wanted them to stay satisfied long after the honeymoon was over. That said the audio controls are a bit finicky (upgraded in 1998) and tall rear passengers will find its 848 mm (33.4 in) legroom and 935 mm (36.8 in) rear headroom a little cramped and only suitable for short distances (the rear seats were upgraded in 2000). The trunk however is reasonably sized at 388 L (13.7 cu ft), ironically 11 L (0.3 cu ft) larger than the current model.
