Most F150's came with an automatic transmission, though a manual was available on some models. Babij comments "the automatic transmissions are typical Ford Truck- very reliable, but sometimes sluggish feeling, and they're not the most efficient transmissions in terms of putting power down. But where they lack in one place, they make up for it in reliability."

A 4x4 equipped F-series pickup truck is a capable off-roader.

Noted automatic transmission problems deal with leaking. For instance, it's not uncommon for the transmission to leak fluid into the transfer case. Though this doesn't upset the transfer case in a serious way, the low level of automatic transmission fluid will make for rough shifting, tough engagement and a shorter lifespan if left un-repaired. Additionally, should the transfer case get any water inside, the switch controlling its mode selection may short out. This makes it impossible to switch between 4x2 and 4x4 modes.

A good idea in any vehicle which may have seen off-road duty is to have the transmission, differential and transfer-case fluid changed upon purchase, as these fluids may, over time, be contaminated with water from crossing of deep puddles or streams.

A familiar area of concern is outer tie rod ends which wear faster than other brands. These are considered to be an inexpensive fix, and Babij explains "a once a year front end check over is always a responsible investment for any vehicle, so any wear would be observed at this time." A well maintained model may not pose any difficulty, but make sure to have the parts checked before purchase and yearly throughout your time with it.

There were several major recalls on the F150 as well- and you'd be best advised to find out whether or not the service work was performed. For instance, on some models, the throttle plate could stick open in cold weather while the cruise control was enabled. This is caused by ice forming in the throttle body, and the fix is relatively simple and inexpensive.

The steering column was another concern, as breakage was possible which would render the truck unable to steer. Steering is important- so make sure the affected steering column yoke is in good order.

The dashboard is somewhat simplistic.

Lastly, some electrical problems and cruise control wiring led to highly publicized vehicle fires in the nineties. Certain switches may overheat and smoke- at best rendering that particular function unusable, and at worst putting your truck and the building it's parked in up in flames.

Babij stresses "these major concerns affect a relatively small proportion of the F-150's on the road. Overall, it is a fantastic buy no matter how equipped. Just be sure when looking at a used one to have a Ford dealer, as opposed to a private shop, check the truck out first."
