Questionable reliability underlies top-notch selection and driving dynamics
Niggling problems include rattly door speakers, a failing clutch return spring and a loose and noisy throttle cable that may vibrate against the engine cover. Windows could fall into the door because of weak clips, which is a real bummer if it's raining or cold outside.

Electrical issues were notable- a problem which characterized VW's reliability for some time. Apparently, parts like ignition coils, sensors and powered accessories tend to stay operational only for a finite period of time. Make sure all windows function properly- especially the rear ones, which have a tendency to wear out. Factory anti-theft devices may arm, disarm, or alarm while driving or sitting in your garage.

Electrical problems can be hard to track down, especially if they're intermittent in nature. Best advice here is to have a look at where the car was serviced in the past, and see if any electrical repairs have been made.

Engine problems include trouble-light illumination followed by a hesitation and loss of power that seems to be unrelated to the typical culprits- namely the mass air flow sensor and ignition. This is likely a computer problem as opposed to something internal. In fact, a friend of mine who drives a newer 2006 Jetta had the same problem last month.

The 1.8 turbo engine is known for an oil-sludge problem which can cause complete powerplant failure. This one's so common that there was a petition circulated to try and have Volkswagen correct the problem. Owners say it's a mechanical issue inside the engine- but a safe bet is to ensure your oil is changed religiously if you settle on a model with the 1.8 litre engine.

On a test-drive, note the shifting quality of any models with an automatic transmission- as a number of owners report hard or jerky shifting just before having to replace the transmission control module or entire transmission.

Recall items include a possibly-defective brake-light switch, and a possible fuel-line tension issue which could cause a leak. The antilock brake system computer may short circuit and cause a fire in 2001 and 2002 models as well. Volkswagen Canada or your local dealer should be able to advise you if recall work has been performed on your potential used-car candidate. Call them up and have the VIN number ready.

Note that given the premium nature of the brand, resale values tend to be high- which is both a blessing and a curse. Expect to pay a little extra for a Jetta or Golf compared to some of its competition- even with its less-than-shiny reliability record. Why? Most Volkswagen owners will tell you that the magnificent ride, handling and safety far offsets the list of possible problems.
