Sporty and comfortable Sentra has a long list of recalls
A faulty Crank Position Sensor can cause the engine to randomly stall as well-again with the potential for an accident. This issue was covered by a recall too, as was a separate circuit board to which it was attached. Because of a bad solder job, this part can also cause hesitation, a no-start condition or check engine light illumination.

Remember that the check engine light comes on for a variety of reasons- so a number of different sensors could be the culprit. Aside from the recalled items, some owners report frequent trips to the shop to have various other sensors changed and inspected.

Other issues owners report seem to revolve around premature brake wear, worn out interior switches, overheating, and premature head-gasket failure.

SE-R models with the 2.5 liter engine were known for a complicated problem involving the engine computer and emissions system. If your potential used model is affected, it could be subjected to an oil-consumption condition which may require the replacement of the engine.

Long story short, the engine could run hotter than safe for the material within the pre-catalyst, causing it to break up. This could work its way into the combustion chamber and ultimately score the cylinder walls- causing oil consumption. This issue became a recall item that required the dealership to remove and inspect the pre-catalyst, determining whether or not the material could have worked into the engine- in which case it would be replaced.

SE-R (2.5 liter) powerplants are also known for improper performance of the piston-rings meaning that it's imperative owners keep their oil topped off. If they don't, engine damage or even an engine fire may occur. Pull out the dipstick and inspect the oil level and condition before starting the car.

If test driving any used Sentra, be sure to listen for any strange squeaking or rubbing noises from the front end- which could result from an improperly seated strut bearing. Pick away at the interior as well, making sure that all switches and buttons work.
