V70 / XC70 great to drive- but be aware of service history
Headlights came with washers for maximized visibility, and you'll find other nice touches like an in-cabin pollen filter, HomeLink remote, auto dimming rearview mirror and more. Depending on the year and model in question, you'll find safety covered by standard ABS disc brakes, side airbags, curtain airbags, traction control and stability control.

Volvo V70 owners surveyed tend to rate comfort the most highly, followed by handling and security. Space, esthetics and drivetrain come in closely behind. Fuel consumption varies from acceptable to poor depending who you ask- and owners admit that careful driving is required to achieve good mileage.

In all, V70 is an easy machine for a family to love- though used shoppers should exercise caution in searching for one. Despite the rock solid ride and safety, V70 and its siblings seem to have less than ideal reliability.

The word 'transmission' comes up frequently. There's a higher than comfortable level of V70 and XC70 owners reporting the need to replace gearboxes prematurely- sometimes more than once.

This seems to be a well known and documented problem with the V70 and XC70 models- so shop for a used example with a full service history available. Look for as new a model as possible, one with an extended warranty, or one that's already had the transmission replaced.

Annoying electronic problems have been documented as well- mainly dealing with the electronic throttle module which controls the engine's operation. A malfunction can cause surging, power loss and a variety of other sporadic issues that can be tricky to diagnose. As with the transmission, it may be wise to look for a used V70 that's had this part replaced already.

Early model V70s and XC70s had a recall surrounding the throttle housing and throttle software that can address a frustrating loss of power. A faulty fuel pressure sensor could trip a check engine light, and there were several recalls for seatbelt-related issues too.

All said, most owners seem to love their V70s and XC70s regardless of potential issues. If you're looking for a used one, the best advice is to shop very, very carefully. Get service records and look for a model that's familiar to your local Volvo dealer. Be sure to snatch up any extended warranties you can, too.

Of course, if you're not dead-set on owning a Volvo wagon, there are plenty of other fish in the family-hauling sea.
