The demi-doors are shortened (by about 20 cm) versions of those found on Chevy's four-door fullsize pickups, and they've been cut to fit K5's shape and cutlines. The reinforced two-stage hinges allow for 180-degree movement, Ramsey says, and that makes access to the cab much easier.

Gary Mulder, Tahoe's assistant brand manager for product, says, "These heavy-duty 180-degree hinges create a huge, nearly 1.5-metre-wide opening for better interior access. They really help you to easily load your gear into the back."

The modified rear features a liftgate to provide access to the rear cargo area that's 1.8 metres long with the 60/40 split-fold rear bench seat down, or almost a metre long with the seat in its upright position.

Cosmetic features of the K5 include the gleaming ends of a dual exhaust system, a lowered front fascia and foglamps, exposed tow hooks and a new nickel-colored grille. There are also larger, body-colored fender flares, aggressive lower body cladding, and 18-inch, five-spoke/six-bolt Budnik wheels with exposed lugs and a milled Chevy Bow Tie, all of which are wrapped in BFGoodrich T/A LT285/60R18 tires.

K5's inside is medium gray and trimmed with graphite leather and carbon-fiber trim accents, and the Tokyo-by-night instrument panel has a gauge cluster layout similar to that found in Chevy Avalanche 4-door pickup, which is absolutely headed for production.

The outside mirrors have turn signal indicators, while the interior mirror has the three-button interface for GM's OnStar navigation-communication-emergency system.
