Although GM is famous for their automatic transmissions, having the Allison nameplate affixed to the optional 5-speed automatic equipped in this test vehicle increases confidence in the models long-term load carrying abilities. Improving stopping power and general control, the Allison 1000 features engine grade braking, a feature that shifts the transmission down automatically from fifth to fourth gear when descending steep hills. During my weeklong test, I found take-off to be quick and smooth, while shifts were a little more abrupt than those experienced in the cars and light trucks I usually review. A notable feature is a power take-off bolt-on allowing you to run external devices like generators - contractors rejoice!

Although the Silverado is no sports car, its substantial track makes for fairly good handling. The shear length of the wheelbase produces a relatively smooth ride over choppy pavement and gravel roads, but the real gains come from a new independent front suspension which incorporates torsion bars on both 4x2 and 4x4 variants. The improved ride is accompanied by enhanced steering feel and stability.

Brake feel has improved dramatically too, with the addition of four-wheel discs. Larger front rotors and a 35% increase in pad size make for shorter stopping distances (100 km/h to 0 in 48.6 m/160 ft - unloaded).

While climbing in and out of the Silverado crew-cab is difficult for the height challenged, once inside visibility is superb. The Chevy's expansive interior accommodations will carry six large adults in complete comfort, or five with the optional bucket seats. What do I mean by comfort? Try dual-memory power-adjustable, leather clad front seats with 2-way heated cushions. A large center armrest houses ample storage, while cupholders abound for front and rear passengers. A premium in-dash CD audio system with cassette provides road tunes. Also, power windows, locks and mirrors add to the luxury ambience and an effective HVAC system with large and simple 3-dial controls keep driver and passengers at the optimum temperature. All this hedonism doesn't come cheaply mind you, adding up to over $50,000 from the 2500HD's base price of $25,385.
