To reach Salt Spring Island, there is a slow meandering ferry that stops at each 'major' port in the Gulf Islands, as well as a non-stop direct route that takes no more than an hour. The first would get us to our destination at a reasonable hour, and the fact that catching the direct ferry would mean waking up well before the birds begin to chirp made it easy to opt for the more scenic route.

With that thought we started packing. At first I was sure that my wife, Jennifer, had packed too much (such a 'guy' thought). I quickly began to change my tune once I saw the massive load occupying only a fraction of the 300M's gargantuan trunk - later to take on the nickname 'the black hole'. We were astounded to find out what it actually could hold, and even more astounded to learn that the 300M is the 'petite' one in Chrysler's family of LH platform cars. The Intrepid, Concorde and LHS each have trunks that are quite a bit larger than their agile little brother that was designed for narrower European roads. In the end there would have even been enough room for us to bed down - in an emergency of course. You could just pop down the split folding rear seats and stretch out through the trunk. Hey, who needs a hotel?

Speaking of hotels, Salt Spring Island must have more Bed & Breakfasts per capita than anywhere else in the world. Once again, however, we chose to stay in the Harbour House Hotel, a wonderful little inn with a spectacular view of Ganges Harbor. Some of the rooms have fireplaces and private decks while all have a cozy country motif. We have never been disappointed with the food, which is one of the most important criteria of a weekend away, and thus we stay there often.
