Once settled into our room, we set out on one of the little narrow winding back roads that form a latticework throughout the island, hardly interrupting the abounding wildlife. Eagles are easy to spot either perched high atop an old growth Douglas fir or soaring effortlessly in the azure skies overhead. As well, families of deer are everywhere, nonchalantly wandering around the roadways looking for tasty nibbles of lush greenery, flavored with the previous winter's road salt. The 300M is a joy to drive through the islands many twisting double-lane roads. It's quiet, replete with luxury features and quite comfortable.
With all that room still left in the big trunk, it got us thinking about shopping. There's no shortage of craft shops and fairs on an island that houses so many neo-hippies that the town Ganges has been renamed 'Ganja's' (for those not born and raised in the drug culture, ganja means marijuana). Truly the best thing to do on the island is, well... nothing at all. Thus we puttered about for a couple of days, accomplishing little more than the purchase of a few Christmas gifts.
Every now and again I just couldn't help myself, and we took off on little blasts in the 300M around the island. Its powerful 3.5-liter V6 generates 253hp, more than adequate for passing tired old Volvo station wagons and VW vans. It manages the tight corners incredibly well for such a large car. The meaty all-season radials on massive 17-inch rims gripped the road surface with confidence while the M went from an apex to a crest to another sweeping right-hander to yet another undulating dip... all the while never complaining one iota. Its big shoes planted squarely on the ground, its suspension firm yet unruffled without much if any body lean. Yes indeed, Chrysler has managed to create quite a sports sedan.
