Precision. Going fast is one thing, superb handling is another, but when someone cuts in front of you, the ability to bring things to an abrupt halt is all that really matters. Hit the ABS brakes in the GTI and the 288 by 9 mm front vented and 232 by 9 mm solid rear discs bring things to a standstill in short order - you won't be disappointed. But be forewarned, you'd better check your rearview mirror for anyone traveling too close behind - they can't stop as quickly as you.
Perfection. Although I said earlier that the GTI is all about performance, slide in behind the wheel and take a look around. The GTI GLX doesn't look or feel like a bargain basement economy car. I've driven $80,000 luxury cars that aren't finished as well as even the most basic VW. Everyone who climbed into the passenger seat was immediately impressed with the GTI's attractive design, high quality materials and beautiful fit and finish. Each switch clicks with the precision of a surgical instrument. VW literally shines in the execution of sunroof controls. A rotating switch allows you to open the roof at staggered intervals, letting in as much or as little of the outside environment as you want. The back lit gauges, and buttons in electric blue and red, are a feast for tired eyes, as well as proving functionally superior during night driving. Occupants are pampered with an electronic climate control system and comfortable 5-position heated leather seats. The Monsoon audio system with steering wheel controls is one of the best in the business, whether cranking out dance grooves or meditating to Brian Eno's Ambient Music for Films. All in all, you will find few better automotive environments, no matter how much you spend, than the inside of a GTI. If the current level of luxury is more than you want, for '02 you can buy a base GTI sans the leather and sunroof - an even better bang for the buck.
