Partly covering the engine compartment is both a flexible, heat-proof tissue and a fire-resistant carbon-glass fiber plastic. The former covers the 'cold' units and systems such as the air filters, cooling and brake system while the 'hot' components around the engine such as the exhaust manifold are shielded by the latter.

Due to its high cost BMW's sensational F1 inspired SMG Sequential Manual Gearbox won't be base equipment. Rather a 5-speed manual and CVT automatic transmission are expected. The SMG, that could make its way into an M1 version (does anyone else like the sound of that name), eliminates the foot operated clutch to shift its gears much faster than humanly possible via paddles on the steering wheel column. This technology is currently available in the M3 coupe and convertible and I can personally attest, is fabulous.

BMW is also renowned for fabulous handling, and the short wheelbase CS1 should be sensational. A fully-independent suspension rests on 18-inch light-alloy wheels surrounded by 215/45ZR18 front and 235/40 ZR18 rear tires. The big wheels make room for extra-large disc brakes, measuring 335 mm (13.2 in) in diameter at the front and 330 mm (13.0 in) at the rear. Their 6-piston racing calipers fitted at front and four pot brakes out back should bring the little convertible to a halt in short order.

The 1-Series that will make production will be available in coupe form as well as this convertible, with no word yet on a 4-door sedan. Will it look anything like the CS1 concept? If Chris Bangle is still in charge of the design department when the tiny car is unveiled there's a good chance it will. And that, in this humble scribe's opinion, would be a very good thing.
