The 50/50 split middle row seats are limousine-like, while those stuck in the far reaches of the cabin might find quarters slightly more cramped. That said the Escalade has the roomiest third-row seating I've tested. Back-of-the-bus have-nots will also miss out on the mid-passenger audio controls and headphone jacks. Amenities like these give parents of small children an entirely new reason to hope for a healthy inheritance. The stereo will allow your kids to listen to rap, pop or thrash metal while you and yours enjoy Beethoven, or slightly more classic Led Zeppelin.

Finding storage for CD's is too. Between the front seats, the center console incorporates one of the largest junk bins in autodom. After only one week it was filled with everything from baby bottles to bath toys. In its lid, another convenient compartment fits smaller items. You won't be wanting for rear cargo space either. Even with the third row in place, you can haul a small piece of furniture. If you need more room, fold the seats forward or take them out entirely. Each 50/50 split seat pops out easily, for light hauling. While loading, the one piece tailgate lifts up and out of the way, becoming a shelter from the rain. For smaller items, the glass opens on its own.

The Escalade's abundant capacity, however, doesn't come without its drawbacks - unwieldy dimensions. One would think an eight passenger, 2,635 kg (5,809 lb), 5,029 mm (16.5 ft) SUV might be difficult for a 5'2" mother of six to park, but fortunately Cadillac has included ultrasonic rear parking assist that beeps inside to warn of obstacles behind. This proved indispensable. Other safety features include improved lighting and braking, safer seat designs, side impact air bags and OnStar, GM's superb GPS/communication system.
