Decadent. Things aren't all rough and ready when you get inside. Dodge pampers occupants in the SLT with comfortable, 6-way power adjustable, heated leather seats, dual zone temperature settings up front with rear controls and vents for both rows of seats. You'll also get tilt steering, cruise control, power heated mirrors, power windows with remote power locks and seating for eight with the 3rd row option. An 8-speaker Infinity sound system can now be adjusted via steering wheel controls, while the instrument panel is also updated for 2001. Fit and finish is not quite as good as that in premium marques, but in its segment it has nothing to be ashamed of.

Deep. Storage is exemplary, swallowing 532 L (18.8 cu ft) with the third row in place. Fold it flat and you now have 1,430 L (50.5 cu ft). Fold the second row and you've got a whopping 2,492 L (88 cu ft) of storage, making the Durango the perfect companion for trips to Home Depot.

Devilish. There is no shortage of power due to the standard 235 hp, 4.7 L, SOHC V8. If that's not enough an optional 245 hp, 5.9 L, OHV V8 is available. Each has a resonating V8 rumble, and significant torque for towing - 295 and 335 lb-ft respectively. What's more, these engines use regular unleaded, and with a fuel economy rating of only 15-mpg city and 18 on the highway, you'll appreciate the cheaper gas. To move the 2,100 kg (4,630 lb) Durango even quicker, opt for the R/T package. You'll get an even more energetic 250 hp V8 with a robust 350 lb-ft of stump pulling torque, and the added bonus of an exhaust growl to rival a 427 AC Cobra. The good thing is there's no bad choice in engines. Each power unit is well suited to its task, offering benefits depending on your needs. A four-speed automatic transmission gets the power to the wheels.
