That said I was impressed with the Envoy's road manners. It feels more like a big car than a traditional truck, having a smooth ride due to impact absorbing rear air suspension. The real gains are found in body and frame rigidity, as the latter is created in a hydroform process incorporating eight cross-members for added strength.

That strength is necessary when the huge power of the inline-6 is unleashed. 270-hp and 275 lb-ft of torque makes light duty of heavy labor. The Envoy is capable of pulling its own two ton plus curb weight, as well as up to an additional 2,767 kg (6,100 lbs) to 2,858 kg (6,400 lbs), RWD and 4WD respectively.

Fortunately my complaints are few. I found the array of switches on the door armrest confusing, as was the radio tuner button, which I constantly mistook for the volume. Also, the Envoy came with a large fitted tub for stowing junk in the cargo area. While a great idea, anything I stowed rattled around in the hard plastic and drove me nuts. I eventually removed the tub completely.

Moot points aside, the Envoy offers serious performance in a refined, attractive package. With seating available for seven it represents a stylish alternative for those tired of their minivan. Nuclear families rejoice!
