Three months ago Canadians wouldn't have much cared about what Mitsubishi was revealing at the upcoming New York auto show, but since the Japanese firm will try again to launch itself in Canada in about two years, it's of more interest.
Given the importance of compact cars in the Canadian market, the 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer sedan will be of particular import. It's also likely to be one of the few vehicles in the current lineup that will arrive in Canada as-is.
Lancer is "positioned to take on the best compact sedans the world over," says Janis Little of Mitsubishi's PR department, with its "European-inspired design and a spacious interior."
Little promises that the 2-liter, 4-cylinder engine to be found in the new Lancer "will have excellent low-end torque and high-end horsepower."
Furthermore, she says that Lancer will have a long list of standard convenience features in its U.S. incarnation, including power windows and door locks, air conditioning, CD player, and driver and front passenger airbags.
Available safety features include front seat side airbags and anti-lock brakes with an Electronic Brake Distribution system.
Looking beyond the immediate reach of Lancer, says Little, "Mitsubishi will also showcase two interpretations of its vision for sporty, stylish multi-activity vehicles that achieve outstanding versatility, fun-to-drive performance and standout styling."
