2002 Nissan Maxima - Canada's Performance Sedan Value Leader

The Maxima has been a performance icon in the sport sedan segment for longer than some car companies have been on Canadian soil. While other Asian manufacturers have tried, the Max comes closest to mirroring a European driving experience. What makes it so good?

Let's start with its jewel of an engine, upgraded for 2002 to 255 horsepower. With a quick shift from 6th gear to 4th and a tap on the drive-by-wire accelerator pedal, the free-revving 3.5-L V6 transforms the understated sedan from mild-mannered commuter to fire-breathing thrill seeker. Within seconds dawdling lane-blockers become specs in your rearview mirror as you speed off to enjoy the open highway. The optional six-speed manual, available only with the SE, is precise with relatively short throws and intervals perfectly matched to the engine rev range - a 4-speed automatic with gated shifter comes standard.

Nissan does a great job minimizing the inherent result of 246 lb-ft of torque mixed vigorously with front-wheel drive, as torque steer is only slightly apparent when accelerating aggressively out of tight corners. This is where the Max excels, devouring circular on and off ramps with little body lean or squeal from the P225/50VR17 tires available on the SE, the sportiest set-up - P215/55VR16 tires on 5-spoke alloy rims are standard. Independent struts are found up front while Nissan's unique multi-link beam suspension commands duty in the rear.
