What makes it unique? A lateral link located behind the torsion beam - the old model had it located in front - improves compliance steering characteristics for greater stability. The rear tires remain near perpendicular to the road, producing maximum gripping force. This in turn allows the front suspension to be tuned for better grip, reducing the characteristic front-wheel drive understeer. Nissan says that the added grip allows the engineers to tune in a higher degree of ride comfort without compromising high-speed handling, but my experience proved slightly different. While brilliant through the corners, the Maxima SE felt nervous at top-posted freeway speeds. Unfortunately I wasn't able to take it on the track, so I can't comment on its composure at its reported 220 km/h (137 mph) top speed.

Fortunately the formidable forward thrust is matched by an equally potent braking system, including ABS assisted discs on all four wheels assisted by electronic brake force distribution (EBD). To improve grip in inclement whether, traction control (TCS) is standard on the GXE and GLE and available on the SE only with the automatic - the 6-speed gets a helical limited slip differential.

The Maxima looks and feels more upscale than other Nissan products on the inside, sharing switchgear with Infiniti. Its centre console is especially attractive, housing the standard climate control system and 120-watt, 6-speaker AM/FM/CD/cassette audio system, with steering wheel controls. The base GXE is endowed with premium standard features including automatic xenon HID headlights, a new trip computer, dual heated outside mirrors, auto dimming rearview mirror, automatic climate control, and an anti-theft system. The GXE also includes lower body side spoilers, cruise control, power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, heated front velour seats, tilt steering, height adjustable armrest, 60/40 fold-down rear seat with centre armrest and a leather wrapped gear shift handle.
