Expedition mainly a safe bet, but be prepared for the fuel bills
Treehuggers needn't read any further- but those after a large, powerful and capable SUV with big towing capacity and room for the whole family should take note. Doing battle with the likes of the Chevrolet Tahoe and its various clones, the Ford Expedition went on sale for its second generation as a 2003 model.

This big-rig SUV could haul over 8,000 pounds and boasted seating capacity for the entire family. Handsomely styled and tremendously roomy, Expedition amounted to a basically-ideal way for one to transport their kids, pets, toys and boat off to the cottage or lake in relative comfort. With a trunk size of over 3,100 litres, space was a non-issue when drivers needed to transport less passengers and more large gear.

Hardware included the staples- like air conditioning, cruise control and power accessories. Options included a sunroof, 6-CD changer, heated leather seating and steering-wheel mounted audio controls. The industry's first power-folding third-row seat was installed to the Expedition too, expanding cargo space at the touch of a button.

Also available were a backup radar system for the parking impaired, a rear-seat DVD player for the kids and power adjustable pedals for the vertically challenged.

Safety was covered by driver, passenger and side airbags as either standard or optional, depending on the year. ABS brakes were included, as was a stability and traction control system with life-saving 'Rollover Stability Control' later in the Expedition's life. Tire pressure monitoring was available, too.

Power came from a choice of V8 engines- namely a 4.6 litre unit with 232 horsepower or a 5.4 litre with either 260 or 300, depending on the year. A four-speed automatic was the sole transmission offered, and the smaller V8 was ditched in 2005, leaving the 5.4 litre unit as the only available powerplant on newer models.
