Used 350Z a legend in the making-- just watch the gearbox and aftermarket parts
A common though somewhat inconclusive issue with the 350Z, especially in earlier years, was the transmission. Be sure to note the condition of the clutch, and move to another candidate vehicle if you note any slippage, grinding or abnormal noises when shifting gears. Several owners of early 350Z models report that difficult shifting or shifting accompanied by a ‘metallic grinding’ sound was a precursor to manual transmission failure.

The VQ series V6 engine seems to be a fairly reliable performer as it ages, but note the level and condition of the oil and coolant on a test drive. These can often reflect the care the vehicle’s previous owner gave it. Check for engine, transmission and differential leaks underneath, too.

Being a performance car, you’ll want to check out the condition of the brakes and tires-- noting any abnormal wear on the insides or outsides of the tires that could indicate a problem with alignment.

The 350Z was available as a convertible model for several years as well. It’s mechanically identical to the coupe, albeit for the motorized cloth top roof. If testing a convertible Z, be sure the roof operates smoothly, and carefully inspect the top, both inside and out, for rips, tears or signs of abrasion. Inspect or smell for mildew too-- which could also indicate a problem leak. If the fabric roof has any amount of duct-tape on it, walk away.

Finally, be sure to avoid a used 350Z with heavy modifications. Many will have relatively safe intake and exhaust upgrades which aren’t cause for much concern. However, unless you’re adept at tuning and mechanics, you’ll probably want to avoid a used model with a turbocharger, supercharger or nitrous oxide. Any of these systems, improperly set up, can turn your engine’s internals an expensive metallic soup with little to no warning.

With any modification, it’s a good idea to investigate the quality of the parts and their installation.

Remember, if in doubt about any part of your potential used Z, a Nissan mechanic can provide added peace of mind with an inspection and road test. Your closest Nissan dealership can help you determine if there is any recall work outstanding, too.

Go with a 350Z and you’ll find yourself with an exciting, energetic and recognizable ride for years to come. Just look for one with full service records that’s as close to stock as possible.
